Although many blogs have successfully ranked in the search engines, many have not. This is why it is not recommended to rely only on the search engines to attract visitors.
Why would you want to promote your blog? Well, you would be crazy not too! The whole purpose of creating a blog is to attract visitors right? What good is a blog if no one is reading it?
