Stress Eating Solutions – 3 Tips to Stop Stress Eating
Stress eating is probably the biggest and most common cause of overeating. Those who feel the strain of stress feel that they need to comfort themselves as soon as possible and they do so with food. The problem is that this doesn’t really solve the stress and even makes it worse because now you have guilt as well, guilt for overeating.
It’s not easy to find stress eating solutions which work for everyone simply because we all suffer from a different sort of stress and one which comes from different causes. However, as someone who has helped people overcome overeating problems, I have a few tips:
1. Realize that stress isn’t really the problem. The way you deal with it is. Stress eating is really just emotional eating. You overeat to make yourself feel good when you feel a negative emotion of some sort. You don’t have to eliminate stress totally from your life to get better. You need to control your emotions better.
2. However, you need to bring your stress to a normal level to be able to actually function. I suggest doing 5-10 minutes once or twice a day of deep breathing exercises, meditation, yoga, or simply lying down with your eyes closed and letting your mind wander. It won’t eliminate stress completely but it will get you to be much calmer and capable of dealing with your emotions.
3. Stress eating is a term made of two words which come one after the other, but they don’t have to. You can and should break them apart. There are many ways in which you can make sure the stress in your life doesn’t drive you to overeat. One way is to count to 30 or 60 whenever you feel the urge to binge. This will help you identify that the source of your hunger is stress and calm down.
Another way to break the tie between stress and eating is to take a walk or do some light exercise whenever you’re stressed out. Get out of the house and away from the fridge. This will give you time to see things as they really are.
