Selling 101 – How to Get People to Buy Your Stuff!
Most people hate selling. The get a mental image of them having to be pushy, dishonest, approach people that they don’t know, and generally just making a fool of themselves. Hey, I’ve been there as well. We’ve been told to do those things. To talk to everyone, to shamelessly approach people and flaunt your products. How’s that going for you? For me, it didn’t work at all and it made me look stupid, just as I thought it would.
So how do you sell your products then? There are a few different ways, actually, there are many ways but you need to understand how people think before you can sell. I have no training in psychology but from all of my research there is a fundamental instinct that all people possess. No matter what we do and the choices we make are all based on two feelings, achieving pleasure or avoiding pain. Think about it. When you get down to your most basic reasons to do things your goal is one or the other. Example: I make sure to clean the dishes daily to avoid my wife’s angry look (avoiding pain…lol).
Did the lightbulb go on? If you’re like me you’re going “how does this help me?”. Well, your product or service needs to fullfil one of those personal needs or feelings. You can have the world’s greatest energy drink but if it can’t fill your prospect’s need they won’t buy it from you. Likewise, you can be promoting the greatest and most profitable business opportunity in the world but if your prospect thinks it will cause them pain they will not get involved.
Getting back to the original thought, most people hate sales. What they don’t realize is that on a daily basis they are involved in sales in just about every aspect of their lives. I had to sell myself to my wife so we could date and later on get married. I still sell myself to her on a daily basis. To get a job, you had to sell yourself on your resume and in your interview. To get your idea across to your boss, you have to sell it. To sponsor prospects into your business or to even get a prospect, you have to sell yourself. They need to buy into you not the business opportunity. When it comes to selling a product, people get this idea that they are the “used car salesman” which isn’t necessarily true. You just have to fill your prospect’s need.
Finding out your prospect’s needs can be difficult. You need to find out their “hot button” that will cause them to buy your product. How do you do this? If you’re face to face, you need to talk to them. Don’t push your product but ask them questions (people love to talk to themselves!) to find out what they need. If you are doing a marketing campaign I recommend that you focus on one product only. If your product will help relieve the pain of arthritis focus on that. Your campaign could be:
Do you suffer from excrutiating pain in your joints? Try………… for relief. Contact………for info or go to “THIS WEBSITE”….. to order. Moneyback guarantee!
You see how it focused on pain and helping them relieve it?
Another example could be: Are you tired of carrying large bottles of water weekly? Do you pay too much for bottled water? For info on a cost effective water purification system at your kitchen sink go to”THIS WEBSITE”….. for info.
Again, I am focusing on helping the stop carrying those big bottles of water and spending a ton of money while doing it.
To summarize, to be effective in sales and sell effectively, you need to fullfil a need. Don’t be afraid of selling, it is quite easy if you can fulfill their needs. Anyone can do this, be creative and have fun!
