List Building – How to Use Viral Marketing to Build Your List
Have you ever caught a flu virus which rapidly spread to your whole family and friends? One large sneeze in a room full of people instantly passes the virus on to others. Viral marketing means you take one action (e.g. write one great article) and it spreads throughout the net. A product which goes viral no longer requires any marketing investment because it takes on a life of its own.
How to use viral marketing to build your list
1. Create viral content
To get an article to go viral the content needs to provide solutions to the most pressing problems of your customers. To do this place yourself in your customers’ shoes so you can think from their viewpoint. The purpose of your article is to prepare your reader’s mind so they’ll visit your website to get more information. At the end of your article include a link to your list building page.
Here are some ways to distribute your content through multiple channels:
2. Submit to article directories
Ezine publishers and website owners often visit article directories to find content to publish in their ezine or on their website. If an ezine publisher with a list of 10,000 subscribers publishes your article you’ll get a ton of subscribers to join your list.
3. Submit to Ezine publishers
Instead of relying on article directories to distribute your content go directly to ezine authors and ask them if they could include your article in their next issue. If you only target ezines in your niche you’ll have more luck than publishing it in general ezines.
4. Write a guest post
Find a very popular blog in your niche and offer the owner to publish your article on their blog. Tell them they will receive exclusive rights to the article so it won’t be published elsewhere. Make sure you include a link to your landing page at the end of your post. If you include your main keywords in the title, content and anchor text of your article you will receive the added benefit of your article attaining high rankings in the search engines.
5. Search engine optimization
If your content makes it into the top 5 listings on the first page of the search engines you’ll receive a continuous flow of traffic. This means your list will grow by itself as long as you maintain your high rankings. There are two main factors which contribute to a high-ranking website (or web page).
- On site factors
- This refers to optimizing your web page by including your main keywords in the meta-tags, heading tags, sub headings, file names, image descriptions, main content, navigation links and anchor text (hyper linked text).
- Off page factors
Rankings are also determined by the number and quality of links pointing to your web page. Generally speaking, if you have more incoming links than your competitors you’ll out rank them in the search engines. A high-quality link from a website or directory carries much more weight than a link from a new website. For example if your website is listed in the Yahoo directory it will immediately receive good rankings.
6. Create a free report
Bundle several articles together to create a free report and offer it for free to ezine publishers and website owners. Submit the report to e-book directories. Make sure you weave your landing page URL throughout your content. By freely distributing your report your content will go viral and send visitors to your list building page.
7. Social bookmarking
Include social bookmarking icons on your website, blog, e-mails and newsletter to give visitors an opportunity to always share your content with others. If a person truly loves your content they will share it with their friends. For example if someone Diggs your article you’ll get a flood of traffic. Build a community of Twitter followers and/or Facebook fans by sharing your content with them.
Every time you create content use one or all of these 7 list building opportunities to grow your list. If you do this frequently and consistently you’ll build a large list that reaps many rewards.
