Introduction To Blogging for Newbies
Introduction to Blogs
This article is written for those new to blogs rather than experienced bloggers.
Although I have been involved in the Information Technology industry for many years, it is only in the last few years that I have become involved in blogs.
You may be wondering what a blog is. In the early days of blogs they were purely for information, which allowed the readers to posts comments on. However, because of the power of blogs their uses have increased dramatically. You can witness this yourself. Take any interest that you have, for example, weight loss. Go into one of the search engines and type weight loss blogs. I have just done this and found 116 million results. If you scroll through these you will find lots of good advice but many will also be selling solutions, whether that be pills, exercise machines, diets or many other products and services.
There are a number of blog providers, but one of the most popular is WordPress (web site use the org site) so I will use this as an example. Whereas web sites are still very popular, blogs have become even more popular, and the main characteristics are as follows:
1. Select a domain name in the same way as you would for a web site.
2. Decide on a hosting company, again as with a web site
3. Most hosting companies will offer WordPress in their package. If there is a doubt, either contact the support desk and ask if WordPress (or your chosen blogging software) is supported, or go to your chosen search engine and type your hosting company and, for example, WordPress. Your question will be answered. The main difference with blogs is that the blogging software is free of charge.
You now have basics to start a blog, and at a very reasonable cost. However, you may need some further building blocks as follows:
The look and feel of the site, known as a theme. If you go to the WordPress site and click on Themes, there are currently over 1,600. You can browse through these until you find any that you like, and load them onto your blog. The majority of these are free, but there are some for which there will be a charge. Initially there are plenty of good free themes so you need not pay for one. The other good thing about themes is that you may not be clear as to which is the best one for you. In this situation you can load several themes onto your site, and preview them. When you have decided on a theme you can activate it. However if you change your mind later, you can activate another theme.
Additional software, known as plug ins. For example you may wish to have a contact form so that visitors can ask you questions. The good thing is that you can download such a plug in and do not have to write any software. There are many other examples. If you go to the WordPress site you will see plug ins, and you can look through these.
More software-these are known as widgets, and will normally appear in a set place on the blog, for example, on the right hand site. If you have a large blog in order to make it easy for your visitors to locate a particular subject, you can have a search facility. This is so easy to do-when you are in your blog literally drag and drop the widget and it will appear on your blog.
Training-by now you may realize the power of blogging, and want to get started but literally do not know where to start. If you decide on WordPress go to a search engine and type "free WordPress video training". I would include the word video because you want to see rather than read about the training.
In conclusion, blogs have become popular for many reasons some of which are:
Low cost-you can literally start with a domain name and a hosting package.
Easy to do-you do not need to be an IT expert to develop a blog. Also once it has been developed it is easy to change.
Favorite by the search engines-because the blogs are easy to change, they are frequently updated and the search engines like fresh content.
