Internet Marketing Tips – Is Negative Advertising Okay?
If you don’t know what I’m talking about, go to Google and just look up anybody’s name. I don’t care who it is. Most likely you’ll find a paid ad that reads something like “John Doe…Scammer?” Now, I understand that this kind of ad is going to attract attention. The prospect is going to want to know the answer to that question. After all, they don’t want to be cheated and that’s understandable. However, we need to look at another side of this issue, and it’s something that most people don’t think about when they write negative ads. And I want to thank Folusho and Mike Filsaime for bringing this up and making it known on a recent Warrior Forum thread. Thanks guys.
On the receiving end of these negative ads is the actual person. Now, granted, as Mike points out, there is a question mark at the end of the ad. However, as he also points out, many people will not see the question mark. They will only see the word scammer associated with the person’s name and assume that the person is indeed a scammer. This has gotten a lot of successful people into a lot of trouble and has also brought about quite a few lawsuits. Nobody wants to be associated with the word “scam” even if it’s in the context of a question. I know I don’t.
So what’s the answer? Well, again, as Mike so eloquently pointed out, saying something like, “Is John Doe Legit” is much better. It serves the same purpose. It gets people to open the ad and look to see if indeed this person is on the level. And it doesn’t come with the negativity that the word “scammer” has associated with it. This is a much better way of advertising and a much safer way as well. There are people out there who WILL sue you just as soon as look at you. So why take chances?
No doubt, negative advertising will continue, as long as there are no laws against it. However, if you want to preserve your reputation, as well as the reputation of the person you’re promoting, it is probably best to stay away from negative advertising.
It just may blow up in your face and cause all kinds of problems.
