Internet Marketing Tips – Hey Rocky Watch Me Pull A Rabbit Out Of My Hat
I used to love watching TV as a kid, especially the cartoons. Remember Rocky and Bullwinkle? I used to watch them a lot. Remember when Bullwinkle would say to Rocky, “Hey Rocky, watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat?” I used to love how he’d get everything BUT a rabbit out of that hat. The one time he pulled Rocky out of the hat. Okay, what does this have to do with Internet marketing? Well, you’re just going to have to keep reading to find out.
Pulling things out of a hat. We do it all the time as marketers. Oh come on, sure we do. We’re heading towards the end of the month and sales aren’t what we’d like them to be so we either make a mad dash to create a new product or put a current product up for sale at a discount. Maybe we do a two for one sale. We try anything and everything to suck every last dollar out of that month before we have to start thinking about what rabbit we’re going to pull the next months.
That’s why you always see John Doe guru come out with this “does it all” product in January and then come out with another “does it all” product four or five months later. Why? Because he’s sucked every last dime out of the product that he sold in January and he needs more cash to pay for that Lexus that he just bought in December. It’s a never ending cycle it seems. You’d think that eventually, these guys would run out of rabbits or at the very least, a need to find them.
And don’t get me wrong. I sometimes pull a rabbit out of a hat too. I don’t do it as often as I used to. As a matter of fact, I used to run quite a few holiday sales during the year. Those of you who know me know that this year, I haven’t done that quite as much. In fact, I think the last holiday sale I ran was last Christmas. It’s been about 11 months since I’ve done anything like that.
Point is, if you’re running a sustainable business, you don’t have to pull rabbits out of a hat. You’ll make sales on a regular basis and won’t need to run special sales or whatever. Now, I may run a sale before this year is over just to give folks a chance to pick something up that they might not have been able to afford earlier on in the year. But it’s not something I make a habit of. Again, if you know me, you know it’s true.
What I’d like YOU to do is look at your OWN business and see if you find yourself pulling more rabbits out of a hat, not because you want to (nothing wrong with giving stuff away) but because you NEED to. There is a very big difference. If you find this is something that you have to do in order to survive, you might want to reevaluate your marketing and business model.
Because one day…you’re going to run out of rabbits.
