How to Use Social Media in Sports
There is no doubt that social media is important these days. Countless people have a Facebook and a Twitter account. The use of smart phones has put information in the user’s hands almost as fast as something happened. Whereas people used to have to wait for information it is now available moments after something happened. Using social media in sports is a natural fit, people want information on a game right away and it is a great way to make that happen. It does not matter if it is a Little League team or a professional team, all sports teams can benefit by using social media marketing. The fans will be grateful because they have the information immediately and that will only help the team.
Some people may think that using the social networks in sports is going to keep people away from the games. That could not be further from the truth. With the advance of technology people are bringing the games with them to the games. Even people seated in the best seats in the house can be seen checking their phones, reading the latest Tweet and checking the scores of the competitors’ games. Even though they are already part of the action they still want to feel closer to it, and social media helps that to happen.
Using social media in sports does not need to be difficult. The first thing that a team needs to do is to find someone who will be in charge of the whole thing. It is not a good idea to put someone who is afraid of technology in charge. A professional team can of course make keeping things updated part of someone’s job but an amateur team will probably need a volunteer. He or she should be someone who will attend all of the games and can also upload video instantly.
Here are some tips and suggestions on how to get started. The first thing that a team needs to do is to sign up for all of the social media websites. The three main sites at the moment that your team needs an account for are Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Social media is constantly changing and evolving, chances are that there will be more sites that a team should be a part of in the future.
Start with Facebook. The site is easy to use and has people of all ages who actively participate. Make a Facebook Fanpage for your team. Once your page has been created make sure that everyone associated with the team “Likes” it. Ask them to send out suggestions to the friends on their personal pages to like it as well. It should not take long until the team has a following. Use the Facebook page to keep fans updated on the latest events. Don’t overdo it, you do not want people blocking the updates from the news feed. Include past scores and also upcoming games with the times and locations. Include a link to where fans can find more information on tickets. If you do not provide that information for them most fans are not going to go looking for it.
The next site that you need to sign up for is Twitter. Ask the players on your team to get an account as well. Follow everyone who follows your team and follow their friends as well. Also make sure that you mention the Twitter account on the Facebook page, asking people to follow. Use the Twitter account to update everyone during the game, keeping people informed of the score and all of the exciting plays. Add pictures during the game as well. That will make the fans feel like they are part of the action.
The YouTube Channel is where your team should post as many videos as possible. Include highlights from the games and also from practices. It is not a bad idea to also have special segments like interviews with the players. You can mention the videos on the Twitter account and include links for them on the Facebook fan page. If you keep the clips short you will keep people wanting more. Most people do not want to sit through a ten minute video but they will watch ten videos that are each a minute long.
It is not difficult to learn how to use social media in sports. If a team uses the latest sites to its advantage it will end up with more fans. People want information right away in this day and age and the social media sites can deliver what the fans want.
