How to Build a List Properly
This article is mainly focused on advises and tips on how to build a list properly.
Building a quality list is by no means an easy task. It does not matter what vendors usually say in order to promote their software or tools. You will need a human interaction.
Building a list to email your prospects can be very time-consuming and can also be very costly. Nevertheless e-mail marketing is still one of the most effective ways to advertise your business on the internet, therefore you need to build your list of quality prospects.
You have heard before the cliché about ‘the money is in the list’, well actually is not totally true. Some people say ‘some money is in the list’ or they talk about percentage of conversions like 1 or 10% the most. So for every 100 e-mails sent they expect about 1% sales. I consider that to be very low. I must say that you can get higher conversion rates depending on how you treat your leads, how much they trust you and how good your products are.
Some of the so-called gurus even brag about the size of their lists like some kind of muscle show-off instead of having an honest approach to list quality.
Your list is alive, you will have people who decide to drop out or unsubscribe if they do not find your offers interesting enough or they can’t trust you anymore.
Some people offer you lists to buy but I do not recommended it. Who knows how old these lists are and the sources and validity of the leads.
The leads being referred to usually with any different given names like qualified leads, targeted leads, double-opt in subscribers, etc. In order to generate a list of potential customers you need to have double opt-in subscribers with e-mails to ensure that your client is interested to be able to be included in your list and to avoid spam.
You can have a SEO developed squeeze page which organic traffic will address or you can send targeted traffic to your squeeze page in order to build your list.
I do not recommend sending traffic directly to the vendor’s page as you will build their list instead of yours.
You can get all sorts of kinds of traffic you build your list but the best thing to do is by organic means, like posting articles to Article Directory known authority (like Ezine) sites (with your signature link), participating in forums and let people know you, creating a Hub or a Squidoo lens, etc.
I have seen all sorts of traffic. Like they say, “I have been there, done that, got the T-shirt”. I have seen automatic (bogus) traffic being generated by some kind of robot script, and the so elusive real-people traffic. There are all sorts of traffic, the tire-kickers, the curious, the really-interested and the ready-to-buy traffic.
Of course you do not want to waste either your time or the visitor’s time.
You need to have an auto-responder service provider like Aweber or similar. This will guarantee that your list will be generated in an orderly fashion and you will have access to the information available.
You need to have a squeeze page where interest people will provide their names and e-mails (you can ask for additional information but is not recommended at this time). You can make them interested initially by providing useful information (I.e.: e-books, videos, articles, etc.). Then you can build your relationship with them by sending sequentially spaced dated letters or newsletters or training based on what you have offered them initially.
If they get to know you better, they will trust you and you can be sure that your list will grow steadily with time.
