Determine the Demand
Once you've selected your niche, it is important to determine whether or not people are actually interested in the product you'll be selling. There are keyword tools you can use for this, but a simple way to do this is going to sites such as EBay and Amazon, and checking to see if the item is actually selling.
Also, it is a good idea to see how many items are in stock. If there are a large amount of bids, and a reasonable amount of items for sale, you've just determined that your niche has a high demand.
Know Your Competition
Internet marketing is a challenging game, and everyone wants their sites to be the ones you visit. This usually results in a high level of competition between niche sites, but if you follow my advice and choose a narrow niche, this competition level drops off drastically.
A good way to determine your level of competition is by using the search engine, Google. When you view the search results for your niche term take note at how many sites are returned, and what the top ranking ones are. If you feel you could do a better job than the sites on top, then you've just analyzed your competition.
Another good method of determining competition is by using the exact phrase search method in Google. If you wrap your in niche term in quotation marks before searching, Google will only return sites that have that exact phrase in their content or URL. This will provide you with the number of sites you'll be competitive against.
