Email Newsletter Writing Tips
Write a killer subject line
Think about how many emails arrive in your own inbox every day. Are there any that stand out and make you want to read them? Chances are they will have a killer subject line that has grabbed your attention and your own emails have to cut through the clutter too.
They key to getting noticed is to write a subject line that speaks to your target market. A vague or boring subject line like "Spring Newsletter" is not going to jump out and make people want to read more.
Make sure your first sentence strikes a chord
People have short attention spans when reading emails. Very often it's because they have a number of other emails in their inbox waiting to be read. Your opening sentence needs to strike a chord by asking a relevant question, listing a problem your target audience may be having or mentioning a benefit of buying your product or service.
Brevity is king
Keep your emails short and to the point. If possible just focus on one clear subject per newsletter, which could be a sale you're running or maybe useful advice on a particular problem.
Giving something away for free is always a crow pleaser. It does not need to be a service or physical product either – it can be something as simple as a free downloadable guide full of practical tips.
Use call to action graphics
Having a clear call to action on your email newsletter will bring more click-throughs to your website. Make sure you use a short, simple call to action that will fit into a graphic and link this back to your website.
Check and double check for spelling mistakes
It's no good realizing you've made a spelling blunder once your email newsletter has already been sent out. Make sure you spell check what you've written and let someone else read over it just in case there's something you've missed.
Keep on testing
The secret to successful email newsletter campaigns is to keep testing. Experiment with different subject lines and opening paragraphs to see which style your target market responds to best. Most email marketing platforms have a full range of statistics you can monitor.
