Email Marketing Lists and How To Get One For Your Business
To begin email marketing a business needs to have email marketing lists. That brings many business owners into a halt with questions; How do I get a list? Does it have to be a huge list before I can start marketing and getting any kind of results?
There are two kinds of email lists and usually the one is better than the other: Self collected list and Bought or Rented list
Self Collected List is a list that you have collected yourself by acquiring the email addresses from prospects by using a signup or opt-in form which you have on your website or in store. Usually you need to offer some kind of reward for people to sign up to receive your email newsletter. It is not good practice to add people whose email address you have come across to your list without their permission. They need to know that they have been added to a list and you can email them about your products later in emails or in a form of a newsletter.
This is a slower method of growing your list but it is so much better; more targeted, up to date and permission based. Prospects on a collected list are already familiar with your business and open to get your newsletter with offers and information.
Bought or Rented List is a list that you pay for to a company that has collected huge amounts of email addresses. The problem with these is that you don’t really know who these people are or if the addresses are even valid. Definitely they are not very targeted and have not had any contact with you in the past. The downside with using a bought list is also that it is easily regarded as spam. No reputable business wants to get reported for spamming. Getting blacklisted means the end of email marketing!
Ways to Build Your Own Email Marketing List
Opt-in Form: Best way to start collecting your own list is to place an opt-in form on your website asking for your customers’ and prospects’ first name and email address. That is all you really need to be able to contact them.
Placement of Form: Opt-in form should be placed on every page of the website on top of the page, on the business Facebook page, on the counter of the store and every leaflet or ad that the business uses.
Gift or reward: The prospects should be rewarded with a valuable gift for giving out their email address and signing up to receive a newsletter. This can be in a form of a free report, eBook, guide, mini-course, special store discount or even Members Only website access. It has to be something that gives value to the customer’s life.
Social Sharing: A great way to grow your list quickly is to have a social sharing button or link on your newsletter, so that your subscribers can share your information with their friends. Have so compelling offers and information in the newsletter that people want to forward it to their contacts. You can also give a reward to people who get others to sign up for the newsletter.
More Traffic: The more people you get to visit your website, the more will see your opt-in form and offers. Have your website Search Engine Optimized, go to business forums and share your information there with links to your website, comment on blogs and articles and build up your back links this way.
Natural growth of the list done this way is most valuable to a business. In email marketing the beauty is that you can begin your campaigns regardless of the size of your email lists. You don’t have to wait to have a huge list, begin with what you have and build from there. Autoresponders can be used to deliver the information in sequence to everyone who joins the list later on. Email marketing done the right way can bring great results to any business.
