Do Not Use Email Lists For Marketing
The Quality of Email Lists I have a few clients that have been very excited about receiving their new website, and they are insisting that the best way to get the word out about their site is to go out and just buy an email list from email mailing list companies! I tell them, “you have paid me X number of dollars to build your site and it’s 1) optimized, 2) landing page tested, and 3) designed with content/keyword delivery in mind, why do you want to SPAM email the internet when you don’t have to?”
Unfortunately some of the marketing they see, tells them that no matter what we do for them is not as good or as fast as what some magic blue pill can do them. It sometimes feels that in their pursuit of internet traffic, they forget that the regular players in the game have already grown tired of that type of marketing. Spam email and purchasing email lists is something for the ’90s, when all the search engines used meta for their search engine results and people didn’t quite understand that signing up by email for some free gift somewhere, would lead them to SPAM hell. Now with the CAN SPAM Act, anyone that would try those techniques would be ill advised to do so. So I have to go into how email mail outs now require a valid address at the bottom of the emails and how people should be allowed to “automatically” unsubscribe and I am looked at like a crazy man for suggesting such a thing! It’s almost like they want to say, “hey, you have any idea what I went through to get that email address?! And now you want me to just CAN it? No, no, no, I gotta hit ’em with my materials until they either buy something OR change their email address…!”
I know some of you are probably laughing right about know, but you know its TRUE! This is exactly what some people thought about email back then, and some still do. I know that after I talk about email and proper Opt-In solutions, that they then say, “okay, we get it.” And in the long run, their customers like them more. They engage better and even contribute to their efforts. Because they got an email, (their first email) that said, CONFIRM THAT YOU WANT THESE COMMUNICATIONS, makes them an even better relationship in the long run. You have less of the persons that just type in an email (any email, that may not even be there own), just to get some free download, and more of what you really need.
It is unfortunate that even though CAN SPAM changes have made a significant improvement on the elimination of SPAM email, there are a lot of people that are still trailing behind on the news and all they remember were the days when they used to get a ton of emails for VIAGRA when all they really wanted was a free white paper on diesel engines.
