Building Your Pregnancy Confidence With an Empowerment List
Many first-time expectant moms find that life can seem pretty overwhelming when their pregnancy news starts to really sink in. It can be a difficult time trying to make sense of it all; the big things, the little things, the material things, the emotional things, the worries – all choose their own times to present themselves. Thanks to the new hormone balance in your body, some of these things can feel incredibly dramatic and serious. Even the usually super-organized amongst us can find themselves floundering a little at this point.
It’s okay, it’s quite normal. A technique that has helped many new moms is to create your very own Empowerment List. This particular list can go by any name that works for you but the essence is the same. It’s all about making a list of all the things that are worrying you, puzzling you or making you feel anxious and then working through the process of crossing them off when they are no longer a concern.
There is an enormous amount of satisfaction to be found in crossing off items on your Empowerment List because as the name suggests, with each item added and subsequently crossed off, you are another step down the road of empowering yourself for the task ahead.
The things that are added to your list may be completely different to anyone else’s; it doesn’t matter – it is your list for your own empowerment, whatever is going to work for you.
When adding items to your list, it is okay to start with quick concepts or ideas like “pregnancy food” or “maternity clothes” but at some point shortly after adding a concept, try to turn it into a question for yourself. For example, “pregnancy food” could be expanded out to “What sort of food should I be eating and not eating when pregnant?” and “maternity clothes” could be expanded out to “When will I need to start looking at buying maternity clothes?”. By working through your worries and concerns from concepts to questions, you are then more easily able to focus on finding some answers.
Try the simple repeatable process of:
- Worry / Concern – Add it to the list
- Turn it into a question
- Do some research
- Find the answer
- Cross it off the list & gain confidence
The very act of focusing your efforts on finding the answers can often help in keeping those rampant pregnancy hormones from getting too out of hand. It can also help to share your Empowerment List with your partner or trusted support network so that they can get a better understanding of what you are going through. They may even help you in crossing things off!
