Building the Perfect Custom Desk
There are so many types of desks and so many different styles, variations and materials. Here are some tips that will tell you how to organize yourself for building your own desk, and the most popular kind is the computer desk, so I will go with that, and you can go from there.
When most people have an idea to do something they first think of how nice the finished product will look in their home or office and how good they will look / feel while they sit at it / in it, etc. What happens along the way is where the project from hell begins due to bad foresight and planning.
What I will do here is guide you in the right way to approach a desk-building project so that it does not turn into the project from hell. Therefore, what are the main things you have to consider when tackling a project like building your own desk – one word – ergonomics?
Ergonomics is simply the design and function of the desk as it relates the workspace and your efficiency while you are there. There is nothing worse than finding out later that you hate going to your desk because you feel uncomfortable, tired, achy, and irritable or you just plain can not wait to get out of there.
There are several contributing factors to ergonomics for the computer desk and they are that the monitor is at the right height, it can not be too high or too low, and it must be right for the person using it. There is nothing worse than a person at a station is where they do not want to be because they are uncomfortable all the time, and that means "Little" things like the mouse in the right place, as well as the keyboard, because these all add to the discomfort factor and that negatively affects performance.
You should have wheels on your computer desk. The chances are that you will be moving it around from time to time as things change and there is nothing more aggravating and potentially dangerous than dragging when you could roll.
You also need to consider the size of the desk as far as depth, width, and storage space according to your particular body type, type of work (Needing other materials while working), and how the desk fits your type of computer. Your mouse and keyboard should always be a little lower than the monitor, and your CPU should be out of sight where possible to free up workspace. Take very special care when choosing the right type of chair, you sit in it all day, and if it is wrong for you, you will have many problems that will affect your work.
So, be sure to consider all these factors when building your computer desk, or any other kind of desk, because in the end, you will save time, money, and unneeded stress.
