Blogging Tips – How Many Words in Each Post?
Many bloggers wonder what the "preferred" length of a blog post is, or wonder exactly how long their posts should be. There is no right answer, although most people will stick to the old rule that 400-500 words are preferred.
First and foremost, you have to first decide what category of blog yours falls into. If yours is fashion, art, design, recipes, or food related then sometimes limited content with good photographs may hold more value than words. Remember the old adage a picture is worth a thousand words? If you are talking about a handbag, there's only so much you can say before you must include a photograph. Doing short blog posts 200-300 words but having more photographs may benefit this sort of blog. Your post should be long enough to engage readers and drop in relevant keywords.
Business blogs, how-to blogs, and instructional blog posts tend to be longer. These blogs tend to go deeper into discussions often with how-to do this or deep discussion of topics. Although screen shots, or product photographs are often included, these posts tend to be 400-500 words, or until all instructional steps are complete.
Your idea of ??blog posts is to engage the reader and spark interest on a topic. If you have come up with a 1200 word article on "The Rules of Dating", then you may wish to post this in three different parts, for example, "The Rules of Dating: Part One". You could then put a "teaser" that your next segment will come next week. You will have readers waiting to read more. Each of these three segments you can cross link to the others, so that if a reader finds one, they will be able to easily find and read the whole series. This is another tip on how to produce additional content instead of running out of things to say. Use the long-winded articles as several different posts.
Remember that you must find a happy medium on what works for your blog. If your blog post is too short, you may not have enough room to drop in relevant keywords and links. If your post is too long, you may bore the reader. Find a happy medium that works for your blog.
For bloggers just starting up, find a similar topic blog with high page rank and good readership and find out what makes that blog so successful. Are their blog posts full of photos and content, or just content? You may wish to use that as a suggestion on how long your average posts should be, but do what works for your topic. It's okay to break the rules, as long as people are reading.
