Blogging, the BBQ of the Writing World
If writing a White Paper is the black tie affair and articles are our Sunday best, then what is blogging? It’s the BBQ!
Whether for business or personal, blogging is one of the best ways to reach readers on a personal level. Somehow, the very informal nature of a blog creates camaraderie between writer and reader; and that camaraderie translates from blogger to blog page and from there to your business.
I’ve heard it said, albeit quietly when around journalists, that being a journalist doesn’t always translate to being a good blogger. I also know that some of the best blogs come from people who couldn’t write their way out of a paper bag. When you hear that, it has to make you wonder why. Personally, I think it goes back to the BBQ.
You see, we all want to be seen with the right people at a black tie event, so we tend to expose only our shiniest bits. On Sunday, we want the preacher to notice that we are there-so we are on our ‘best behavior’. But at a BBQ there is no pretense. At a BBQ it’s about the people, the conversation, and the food. At a BBQ it’s okay to have sauce on your face-and a blog is no different. At a blog it’s okay to have an opinion; even if you’re a housewife from Tuscany with six kids who’s never had a paying job in her life. And that is what makes a blog so great for connecting with your customers.
