3 Tips for Being a Single Dad
It used to be automatic that once a couple with children split-up, the mother would become the custodial parent. Now, however, more and more dad’s are being granted custodial care of the children. So, more and more dads are being handed the honor of being single dads.
It truly is an honor to be able to raise children. But it can be difficult to do it alone. So, here are 3 great tips for single fathers:
1. Seek Advice
It’s only natural for most men to hate to ask for directions. This is because some men find it difficult to ask for help, even when they need it. So, some single dads have trouble asking for help. But this just can’t happen. If you are dad and are struggling, you have to swallow your pride and get the help you need.
There are a lot of great places to ask for help. The Internet is actually a great place to find the answers you need without even wounding your pride. There are a lot of great advice websites and great blogs online. Here’s an example of just one: Life as a Single Dad.
You can also seek advice from relatives, clergy, school staff, friends, co-workers, and counselors. The last one, counselors, is the most important. And it leads to an important piece of advice: both you and your kids should be in counseling.
2. Remember You
All too often, single parents forget about themselves. They get so wrapped-up in taking care of their children that they forget to take care of themselves. This is a mistake that could eventually become a tragedy. In order to be the dad (or the parent) you need to be and should be, you have to be happy and fulfilled.
So, don’t forget to take care of yourself. Don’t feel guilty about it. Even if it’s just taking an hour a week to do something you want to do: Make sure you take a break and recharge your own battery. It will make you a better dad.
3. Always Love
Children need love. Some dads are great at this and showing love and affection to their children comes naturally. For others it doesn’t come naturally. But if you are a single dad, you have to show your children love and affection. And be generous with your love too. Be sure you always act out of love. You should even discipline with love.
