101 Marketing Strategies – Should You Pay Someone Else to Do Your Marketing?
If you haven’t read the 101 marketing strategies article on allocating your time in the three areas of your business, you may want to go and read it now. If you understand that, this may make more sense. A quick summary – basically between 60 and 65% of your time should be spent marketing, promoting and selling your product or service. If that is true, what is the likelihood you should pay someone else to do that for you?
There are so many areas of business you can pay someone to take care of (hint: start with administration and operations), but one of them should definitely NOT be your marketing. You can get some help, which is definitely recommended, and you should find some teachers and mentors to learn from, but you are the entrepreneur, you are the small business owner. This is your passion, your dream. It is your responsibility to share that excitement with others, to get your dream out there. And, there is no one who will be able to do it like you do. Perhaps at the beginning, before you have developed your marketing and sales knowledge and skill, some people might appear to be more equipped to handle the job, but, if you take the time, that will quickly change and you will want, and need to take charge of your marketing.
And, what happens to the entrepreneurs and small business owners that hire others to do their marketing? They spend thousands of dollars and it rarely works. And, if you are one of the rare few for whom it does work, you end up dependent on others for your success. It’s your business, so just do it.
Once you learn what you need to do in order to build successful marketing systems for your product or service, then, and only then, you can begin to train others in using your system to promote your business. You will still need to keep track of everything and make sure that your systems are working and being implemented correctly, as well as constantly improve and try new options, but you can delegate much of the work that need to be done. Until the systems are tested and known to work, it is risky to hand off too much.
Take responsibility for your business. Learn to promote and market your business and you will be able to claim your success.
