Power Packed Linking Strategies – Part Two

The keyword marketing guide to a linking strategy that packs real punching power.

This is the second in a series of three articles showing you how to find a suitable linking strategy for your website and put it to work for you.

Link strategy number one: The Front Page Link Swap.

The most important page on your site is naturally the home page and as this is the page that is most often pointed to by internal and external links this is the page that carries the most "linking power". This is more usually called "page rank" (Google) or "Yahoo Web rank" (Yahoo).

Important note: If you are promoting an e-book, guide, tutorial or you are using a similar marketing technique then you should make your links come back to the promotional page and not your home page. As this is the page that you will want to go out and compete for you in the search engines.

The way that linking algorithms is of course a closely guarded secret, however it's known that the more links that you have on a page the less "linking power" is assigned to each link on the page. Since a links page with 75 links on it is going to give little benefit in link boost and also a small amount of traffic, it is after all competing with 74 other links.

This is where the front page link swap is such a powerful strategy.

By swapping a link from your homepage with a link from another site of equal or greater linking power you are getting a far larger return in terms of both the link value and traffic than you would for exchanging links on a buried links page.

The downside is that to find willing and co operative webmasters to do the exchange is very time consuming.

Just as you would in your regular business dealings you should make time to seek out potential front page link swap partners. The traffic rewards will really pay dividends.

Link strategy number two. The One Way Directory Link.

As the power of the link goes up as more and more search engines use it as a method of ranking sites so directories are cashing in on a charge to be listed. What was once a free resource has now become an expensive link gathering exercise.

Still the most important free entry entry is but these days the waiting list looks to be forever. Seek out directories and place your links at every opportunity. Industry portals are a great linking source.

Link strategy number three. The Strategic Article Link.

This type of link packs the largest punch of all.

Writing an article on your favorite subject can give you many benefits not least in credibility and giving you recognition as an authority on your chosen subject. It is by far the best way of gaining links and traffic to your site.

The technique is to write an article of five to six hundred words on a subject that you are knowledgeable about. Get multiple of your trusted friends to proof read and contribute and then refine it into a readable style.

Remember that writing for the web is totally different than writing for other media types. Surfing is a voluntary experience for most and it's important that you capture your reader's attention and imagination.

For this type of article do not worry about stuffing it with keywords in your page title and headings, you are not writing for search engines. The aim is to make a highly readable piece that will be distributed throughout all of the websites related to your subject matter in your industry.

So you can not write? It's well worth your while to hunt around and find a good copywriter that you can work with. The return on investment is 1000 times what you would ever get from advertising in your local rag.

A Crash Course In Brain Surgery

Smoke alarms aren’t sexy.

No one longs for a shiny new “Burninator 2000” for their anniversary.

I was but a young chyle when a man came to our house selling smoke alarms. Of course, my Dad didn’t want one. But, he let the guy come in and give his pitch.

I don’t remember what he said, but, he showed us a series of VHS videos of fires, houses burning down, burn victims and stuff like that.

It gave me nightmares for weeks.

My dad ended up buying a house full of alarms.

What the ‘Burninator’ salesman did was very smart.

He reached into my Dad’s mind, felt around for a bit and found an insecurity. Then held that insecurity up so that my Dad could see it with crystal clarity.

He gave my Dad a vision of what it would be like to lose everything he had, including his family, in a fire.

The sale was made after that.

If you want to make your product irresistible, wander into your prospect’s world. Look around and see what insecurities are there.

Bring these out and I guarantee, you’ll never bore him.

Show how your product can soothe his latent fears and you’ll forever be a welcome guest in your prospects noggin space.

So, for example, consider kidney stone sufferers

If you’ve ever had a stone, you know that it can be one of the most painful things you can experience.

In 2006, I had a kidney stone get stuck. I thought I was having a heart attack.

By the time I got to the emergency room, I would have been glad to only have felt that initial ‘heart attack’ pain. Every time I thought the pain couldn’t possibly get worse, it did, by multiples.

I found myself writhing in pain on the floor of the emergency room and later in the waiting room of a doctor’s office.

I can tell you that kidney stone sufferers are not bored of talking about a solution to their problem.

They may be skeptical of promises because of being burned in the past. But, if you can give him a vision of life without kidney stone pain and prove that your product will help, he will listen.

So, paint a vivid picture in his mind of his biggest fears and insecurities. Then show how you can relieve those fears and insecurities.

This requires that you know your market better than they know themselves.

Marketing Brain Trust

Rest assured that no matter how smart you are, you do not know everything about marketing. You do not even know anything about marketing your product! You can not figure everything out yourself, or see all the angles, or provide every bit of critical thinking.

The solution? Create a marketing brain trust.

Use the mastermind principle which says more brainpower brought to bear on an issue means more ideas and greater insight. Gather together a mixed bag of thoughtful, intelligent people who have an interest in helping you create breakthroughs in your enterprise.

Adding brains to the brain trust produces non-linear results. Breakthrough results. Unreasonable results. Quantum Results. Because of the interactions among various people's ideas bouncing off each other, the increased thinking-effectiveness can be multiplicative or even exponential.

Enroll people into your marketing brain trust. Find people who have a vested interest in your success, or the success of your business. You can not have a great brain trust unless people are truly committed.

Your marketing brain trust can take different forms. If you want it to be official (and tax deductible) call it your Board of Advisors. Make it the board's job to help you pilot your venture. You can even ask each advisor to be accountable for a specific segment of information or knowledge, but their real role and true benefit is to work as a group – to release the mind synergy.

Meet periodically – monthly or quarterly – in person, or by phone, video conference, the Internet, or some combination. Check in with individual brain trust members between meetings. Keep them up to date on your progress; Let them know how you are doing. You can pay your advisors and honorarium, or give them options on future ownership.

A different approach is to form a marketing mastermind group. This is less formal and less committed than a Board of Advisors. Gather the mastermind members together periodically and provide refreshments – dinner or perhaps just a case of wine. (I find that red is better than white for masterminding.) Entertain them while they ponder specific issues with you.

The job of the marketing mastermind is to bring alternate perspectives, help you create ideas, and in general, think things through in a way that looks differently than you would yourself.

Let your master-minds know topics in advance, and provide them with appropriate backrounders to get their creative juices flowing. You may also ask them to suggest topics based on what they already know about you.

Try to make this group diverse. Your mastermind members need not be familiar with your particular business; In fact they need not be business people at all. Get artists, scientists, musicians, technologists, writers, humanitarians, hackers, theologists, philosophers, and psychologists – all sorts of creative thinkers, along with marketers, entrepreneurs and executives, to complement those members familiar with your specific business.

You should limit the size of your mastermind group to no more than ten or twelve people, although you can get started with as few as three or four. Really, any number is going to be an increase over just you.

Lastly, create a simple Roster of Marketing Brains. This is the network of friends, associates and acquaintance you can call on who are expert thinkers in specific areas, and may have some vested interest in seeing you succeed. Some of these people you barter with, some do it because they think what you are up to is cool and going to make a difference in the world, some of them you pay as consultants. You may never gather all these people together at once, but assemble them in ad-hoc groups to tackle whatever issues are at hand.

These three marketing brain trust formats are not mutually exclusive; You might have them all. After all, the when it comes to creative minds, the more the merrier.

Superior Marketing Usually Trumps Superior Product

The largest selling mouthwash brand in the world is Proctor& Gamble’s Scope. In second position is the very popular and familiar Listerine. These products enjoy massive sales and international distribution. They command dominant shelf positioning in retailers large and small. There are very few households that do not utilize one of these products to fight halitosis.

And yet, a better product, scientifically verified, and the brand that invented the term “halitosis” to describe bad breath is largely forgotten. Once a huge seller, Lavoris has declined precipitously in consumer popularity. Why?

Originally Lavoris was used as an antiseptic during the Civil War. Formulated utilizing the ingredient Zantrate, Lavoris was first marketed as a mouthwash in 1903. Zantrate is a patented ingredient, and coupled with a low alcohol content and pleasant cinnamon flavor, Lavoris quickly exploded in popularity.

Zantrate has been clinically proven to instantly neutralize the bacteria that promote bad breath. Clinical studies at Hill Top Research in Cincinnati, and the University of British Columbia claim to show that Lavoris is three times more effective than Scope at killing oral bacteria. These studies were so compelling that the three major television networks accepted and validated the results.

Richardson-Vick, the former owner of Lavoris created a classic marketing and advertising campaign that still resonates with older Americans to this day. The Company created the word “halitosis” as a powerful branding aid to identify the problem that Lavoris could solve. It succeeded so well that the word “halitosis” is now found in Webster’s Dictionary. In addition, the term “Pucker Power” became one of the most famous slogans of all time after years of use in Lavoris advertisements.

How does a brand with a century old pedigree, solid clinical support for its claims of better performance and clever branding fall off the precipice and almost disappear from the consumer’s radar? Actually it is not that unusual and the reasons are often quite similar. Lavoris lost sight of the famous old marketing adage, “You are never the greatest, only the latest”.

Graphics, packaging, branding, sales promotion, sales collateral, public relations, display, advertising strategies, sampling and product placement are only some of the components involved in constantly refreshing a product. The goal is to keep the brand fresh and in the forefront of the consumer’s mind as times, tastes and competition changes. However, it is imperative that the consumer not be put off by the new and the changed. Remember New Coke? Remember the K-Car?

The Lavoris brand found itself in a constant state of flux. The product was involved in a number of corporate ownership changes that forced frequent management and creative adjustments. Each new owner was less than keen on refreshing the brand and making essential investments that might have protected its place on shelves, while profits were used for other corporate purposes. In the face of an aggressive onslaught from brands like P&G’s Scope, Lavoris wilted.

There are many examples of great products that are outsold by more pedestrian quality competitors. The resources to market properly, aggressively and creatively all too often trump quality. If you can’t let consumers know about a products superior features and benefits, especially in a cyclonic marketplace, your item will suffer at the hands of the more dexterous marketer. This is where alternative marketing strategies, such as bootstrapping and guerrilla marketing become essential.
