How to Protect Your Passwords Properly

Looking back at last 20 years (I am writing this in 2014), use of systems and passwords has become an unwanted but unavoidable requirement in our daily life. We always require to stay atop of many forms and layers of online protection of our sensitive data. Some examples where we need to use passwords, pass phrases, identifiable pictures etc. Are banks, schools, credit cards, emails, work login, work search, kids account, entertainment, communications, and more and more. As far as the number goes, all these requirements are increasing and as far as complication goes, they are becoming increasingly complicated in nature to use and manage.

20 years back, I had only two account passwords that I had to manage. One email and one bank account. Today I manage over 200 online safety memory chips including for me and for my family! (Wow writing this makes me feel safe! Really ..?)

Again, 20 years back I could put in 6 alphabets or numbers and it was considered a safe, secure password. Today, I have to use alphabets in lower and upper case, numbers and special characters with the strength indicators showing strength of the password as we are typing it to understand how strong and safe the password is (in case case is a cyber crime to crack Down the passwords.) Many companies will not let me use the parts of my name in the password. Then I have to associate my account to an image and keep the image in mind. Further I have to answer some security questions (typically from 3 to 5). To add even more, every now and then I need to associate and confirm my account with a cell phone number! Then there is separate 4 digit pin for bank ATM's etc. Even my voice mail has a 6 digit pass-code!

Talk about complexity! Talk about memorizing!

Is the technology helpful to protect our sensitive data? Yes! Has the technology complicated the issue and pushed us way more to manage in terms of passwords, security etc.? Yes!

So how to manage these complications. Here are some do's and don'ts for it.

Do's

1. Use long complex passwords.

2. Generate and use random passwords yourself.

3. Keep your passwords in an isolated safe file. Write if you want. Even better is to spend a few bucks to have a dedicated drive, USB etc.

4. Use limited login attempts at all the allowed institutions. It basically means after 3 or 2 or 4 (whatever the set number is) unsuccessful log in attempts, your account will be automatically disabled and you will have to go either personally or call to prove your ID and then get your account reinstated. It seems annoying in the beginning but it is a great tool to protect your ID in the long run.

5. Answer security questions in a non traditional manner. Example; Name of the first dog. Traditional answer: whiskey. Non traditional answer: Ihadnodog.

6. Always keep the current back up out of your computer such as in a USB drive.

7. Many experts suggest to use copy + paste rather than typing in the web forms, so follow it when you are logging in.

8. Have a real complex master password for any file that you might be using to store and protect your sensitive information such as passwords, security questions etc.

9. Often change your passwords. Update your record if you are managing it.

10. Always have a working anti-virus program installed. Run the program every few days in manual mode.

11. Delete the accounts you no longer need.

Don'ts

1. Do not use any online system to save and protect your data. It might be chrome or internet explorer provoking you to 'remember' your login information. It may be a service provider tool as Norton protection. I personally call it a third party dependency and it can restrict, corrupt or disintegrate any time. Your passwords and other information is lost without any back up in this case and worst case now all of it can be available to someone else as well ..

2. Never use same password for more than one log-in portfolio ..

3. Do not use easily guessable passwords such as: abc123, 123ABC, 0123456789, XYZ etc. Cyber crime computers attack through the internet and try thousands of password combinations in a minute. They can easily guess the easy passwords and log into your account. The damage can take a-lot to repair in this case !.

4. Do not use a computer to generate random passwords.

5. Do not give access to unknown apps through social media.

6. Avoid using public computers in libraries, schools, restaurants, hotels, etc. If you do have to use it, un-check the "remember me" option before you log-in and clear up everything after use such as cookies, history etc. Make sure you are allowed to clear it and you are not violating any public institution policy.

7. Sharing a password is usually prohibited so do not share your passwords.

Creating and managing as per these guidelines will help you protect your accounts and data safety for a long period.

17. Depreciation

Depreciation is a loss incurred on account of use of fixed assets in the business. Generally, it is charged from profit and loss account at a fixed percentage. The students should exercise great care as regards the rate of depreciation. If rate is without words ‘per annum’, then the rate will be taken irrespective of the period of accounts. This is very important when the period of accounts is less than one year. On the other hand, if the rate of depreciation is ‘per annum’ the depreciation should be calculated on the assets with due consideration to the period for which the asset has been used in business during the year. In case of additions to assets during the year, it is advisable to ignore depreciation on additions if the date of additions is not given. Same rule shall hold good for the sale of assets during the year.

18. Stock at the end appearing in the trial balance.

It is important to emphasize the rule that balance appearing in the trial balance is taken to one and only one place. It may either be trading account or profit and loss account or balance sheet. Since stock at the end is an asset, it will betaken to balance sheet. On the other hand, so long as there is stock in trade, account for that must be kept open and thus be taken to the assets side of balance sheet.

3 Effective Tips To Get Your Dog To Sleep At Night

It’s simple – if your dog is awake at night, you’ll most likely be awake as well. With all the barking, whining and fussing around, it will definitely be hard to get a good night’s sleep. As a dog parent, it’s important to find out what causes your pet to be up during nighttime. Does he get hungry or need to do his business during the wee hours? Is he uncomfortable in his sleeping space? Knowing why he can’t sleep will help you solve the issue much faster.

Here are some effective tips to get your dog to sleep at night:

Include more physical activities in your dog’s daily routine

Canines have all this energy. If they’re not used up throughout the day, it may be one cause why they’re having a hard time sleeping in the evening. To ensure that their energy is used up, take him on a daily walk or run, play a game of fetch or have him play with active dogs. When he expends energy, he gets tired and will most likely feel sleepy as bed time approaches.

Let him know that it’s bed time

Dogs have no concept of time, that’s why it’s important for you to establish both a daytime and a night time routine. Familiarize him with a night routine which he’ll eventually know will shortly lead to bed time. You can start by feeding him dinner then playing for a bit. After a while, you can put away his toys and turn off the lights to let him know it’s time to sleep. Over time, he’ll know this routine by heart and he’ll have an easier time going to bed.

Make his sleep space more conducive

Puppies who are used to crates may feel more comfortable sleeping in one. So if you recently transitioned your pet to his own bed, it may be one reason why he’s having a difficult time snoozing at night. Observe where he is most comfortable sleeping and make it even more conducive – provide a long-lasting dog treat or his favorite toy to make him feel that his sleeping space is a spot that is his own.

The best thing to do is to let your dog associate sleeping and his sleep space with positive things. This way, he will be more comfortable and it will be easier for him to relax and snooze at night.

Newspaper Printing Services – Fleet Street No More!

During the 1980s the newspaper industry in the UK underwent a huge transformation. Up until that time, Fleet Street in central London had been the center of the newspaper industry, with papers being written and printed on site before being distributed across the country. The 1980s saw new developments in printing techniques and newspaper companies began to move away from the traditional, time consuming methods of Linotype printing rather than the more flexible and adaptable digital methods.

One of the most powerful men in the newspaper industry during this period was Rupert Murdoch, owner of News International which produced titles including The Times and The Sun. He saw the benefits of moving to the new digital offset printing methods and started to construct a new newspaper printing services facility in Wapping, in the east end of London. He saw the move to the new facility as a chance to change some of the practices in journalism that he saw as restrictive, such as allowing workers to go home early if their allocated work was finished or paying overtime payments to workers covering for collections who were Off sick. Murdoch saw the removal of these practices as the key way to make his operation more competitive and profitable.

The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) was strongly opposed to any change in working practices that they felt would harm their members. After length negotiations with News International the Union called its 6000 members out on strike at the end of January 1986. News International responded by sacking all employees who were participating in the strike, and began employing new workers to fill their positions. This was a highly controversial move and prompted large scale demonstrations outside the company's headquarters and also at the new newspaper printing services building in Wapping. Ordinary people were encouraged to boycott the newly printed papers in support of the striking workers. Despite massive picking up operations at the new site to try to stop journalists and other workers getting in to work, News International managed to keep production of its titles going through the dispute, without a single day being lost. A large police presence was required at the Wapping site every day to try to ensure that the new employees who wanted to work got into the building safely. Many police and strikers were injured as often as the picketing turned angry and violent.

The strike lasted over a year into February 1987. By this time many of the strikers were becoming disillusioned and they had not been paid a salary for over a year, and many of them simply could not afford to continue in their dispute for any longer. The strike changed the way newspapers in Britain were printed for ever, and by the end of the 1980s all major news had had swithed production to new, efficient sites away from their traditional Fleet Street home. It also changed the face of the Trade Unions movement in the UK along with the Miners' strike of 1984 to 1985.

Diagnosis – Do You Need a Second Opinion?

After being diagnosed with cancer (or any serious illness), it may at first come as a big shock to the system, and even something that maybe hard to digest at first. What if the diagnosis is wrong? Could be one of the first questions that comes to mind, and something that must be clarified to settle any such doubt.

Sometimes, even though evidence has been demonstrated to the presence of a disease, there could still be some room for doubt within the mind. At this stage – a decision must be made as to either accept the information given by the doctor so as a quick treatment plan may be put in place, or to seek a second opinion.

However, serious thought should be given before any such action is taken. For example:

  • Can you afford more diagnosis tests?
  • Will your insurance company pay for them?
  • If the initial diagnosis is found to be correct – Will you be able to return to the place where you were given the initial diagnosis, for treatment?

In most cases, with any such diagnosis for serious illnesses like cancer, there is usually little room for doubt. That is to say – 99.9% of cancer diagnosis' are usually correct. However, mistakes can be made for whatever reason (a fact of life), and it is on one of these occasions that a second opinion may be prudent if a doubt / s exist.

After concluding that a second opinion is the only way forward – all relevant information to the case should be requested from your doctor (some medical institutions may be related to pass-on such information – investigate your legal rights as to request any such information [different States, and countries may have different laws]).

Did you sign anything before such diagnostic investigation took place? Did you read it first? – things that could change your rights.

At this point (armed with such information relevant to the case), an appointment should be made as soon as possible with a newly chosen doctor so as to allow for the first stages of any such further opinion to take place (further studies may well be Ordered by the new doctor, or you may be referred back to your first doctor).

Further thoughts before a second opinion should also be:

  • Do you have the time? – (will your boss give you the time).
  • Will it affect your work? – (taking more time off from work).
  • Are you in a healthy condition to take more diagnosis?
  • Is time still on your side? (Health wise).
  • Are you really sure a second opinion is worth the effort, etc.

Note: It is always worth noting that it is your right as a human being to have a second opinion, whether at the same medical institution, or another one (chosen by you, or referred to by your doctor). Doubts must be clear in the mind before any battle takes place to cure cancer – as cancer must be cooked with a full fighting force so as to not only win the battle, but also to win the war.

A Description Of Book Publishing And Its Options

Mainstream Publishing

Some mainstream publishers are reluctant about accepting work from young writers who can not sign a contract. What matters really, is that the quality or standard of writing should be high in order to compete with adult writers. To do this, the important thing is to thoroughly edit your work and follow the submission guidelines set by the publishers.

Some publishers prefer that you send in a one page query letter first describing the project. A brief that appears on the rear cover of a book should be kept in mind when the query is submitted. Keep in mind that the correct font to be used in your book is "courier new 12 pt" with double spacing in the manuscript. The query letter may be made out in the same font, but without the double spacing.

Self Publishing

This form of publishing is far easier than the former. One can publish one's work at lulu (dot) com for free. A small commission is charged on the sale of the book. The best thing about self publishing is that you set your own price and age is not a barrier. From editing to formatting, everything is in your hands. The services provided by lulu would, of course, raise costs if you are interested in the international market as well. Lulu also provides templates for formatting, which you can get a friend, teacher or parent to help with. Although you need to plan the book cover yourself, lulu will help with that. Publishing your own book that becomes far easier.

One of the other ways of publishing is ebooks, which are becoming more and more popular these days. It makes possible instant access to your book via the internet.

Marketing of your book begins even before printing. The right market should be identified. You must also know where you want your book to reach. Your objective in publishing is what will determine the market.

Mistakes to Avoid

Your book must have mass appeal. You should choose a unique name for your self-publishing company to avoid a giveaway that it has been self-published. Be careful, because some publishers get heavy on print costs.

Help of professionals is necessary for selecting a title for your book, and for designing the cover. Do not paste a photograph of yourself on the front cover (unless you are a celebrity), because that is a definite giveaway that the book is self-published. You may paste it on the lower back cover.

The foreword could be left to those who will buy the book in bulk. The proof reading is one of the most important steps which again should be left to a professional. If these can be taken care of there is no doubt you will successfully sell many books.

O-Back: Integration, Football Style

Ball carriers and offensive linemen have different jobs. They have independent skill sets that are needed to help a football team succeed. Although these skill sets are independent of each other, they do not have to remain mutually exclusive to each group.

Walter Jones, a former offensive lineman with the Seattle Seahawks, will probably be in the NFL Football Hall of Fame. He was one of the best oath lineman with his combination of size, power, and speed. Marshawn Lynch, a running back now with the Seattle Seahawks, is a beast because he brings size, power, and speed to his position. I am not sure if Marshawn will become a hall of famer, but I am certain that he will be in the Seahawks Ring of Honor.

Walter Jones is a big powerful man. These attributes are typical and needed to be a dominant offensive lineman in the NFL. However, what is not typical about Walter are his quick precise feet. His feet help him put his defensive assignment in complete lock-down. Marshawn Lynch has great speed, quickness, and vision like most exceptional running backs in the NFL. What sets Marshawn apart from most other elite running backs is his formidable power. He is able to consistently move the pile several yards after defensive contact has been made. He has established himself as a genuine beast on the football field.

Ball carriers are trained to be shifty and elusive. The good ones can anticipate a defender's movements and use the defender's body weight against him if contact had been made with him or not. Most ball carriers work best in an open space where the running lanes are larger and more accessible. Only a small number of ball carriers deal well with tight crowded area running situations where the running lanes are narrow and less accessible.

Marshawn's wide base helps him establish a firm center of gravity and maintain great balance in tight spots. An offensive lineman has to move and / or maintain control of its defensive assignment. His job requires a combination of power and speed. Power is important in the process, but speed is essential in order to maintain control. Superior foot speed made Walter Jones special. He could maintain control of his defensive assignment for a longer period of time than other lineman. The defensive player who can not disengage from a lineman like Walter Jones, who could push a Cadillac up a steep hill, would have problems doing his job well.

Offensive linemen and ball carriers should cross train with another at least once a week, because each group has a skill set that would benefit the other group. Ball carriers would benefit from training with offensive linemen because they would attain more power by pushing sleds and heading head-to-head against larger stronger reduced lineman in controlled practice drills. The desired result would be that ball carriers develop wider bases like offensive linemen and Marshawn Lynch. It would help them run powerfully in tight crowded spaces on the field. Ball carriers could simply readjust to a typical narrow base once they got into the open field. In addition, ball carriers asked to block larger defensive linemen. Would not it be great if these ball carriers had some of the requisite training to block them effectively? It would make sure some quarterbacks happier.

Offensive linemen would benefit from cross training, because their feet would become quicker. Ladder and quick-cut ball carrier drills would help the linemen control their defensive assignments better. Linemen could stay engaged with defensive players for longer periods of time. Just like the ball carriers, the linemen would learn to expect where their defensive assignments are going and to perfect the footwork needed to beat them to the spot. In addition, coaches may discover a linemen with legitimate ball carrying skills who could be used in a jumbo package situation.

At times, I am tempted to yell out, "Coaches, coaches, please do not wait. You need to integrate. Sure, linemen and ball carrier skills are separate but not equal; However, a little integration, here and there, is needed to win football championships.

Book Review – The American Dream: From Perth to Sacramento

The American Dream: From Perth to Sacramento is the tale of a ballplayer who grew up surfing and playing cricket with his father who finds baseball. The player, Damian, turns out to be a fine player and signs on with an American team to play in the minor leagues.

It’s an interesting story of an Australian traveling to the USA to play ball. The story shows a young boy struggling to find his way in the world of baseball. Seen as an outsider, he has to work hard to impress and move up the ranks to reach his goal of making the major leagues one day.

The story takes place in the early 1990’s before the Australian Baseball League was formed. So Damian learns the ropes of the game through the tournaments around Australia. He rises fast in the ranks of the Australian players and is soon signed to a minor league deal with one of the fictitious Sacramento Sea Lions’ minor league teams.

Damion travels around the US playing in small towns in Louisiana, Texas, Tennessee, and others getting a good dose of small town America which is very different than what he is used to back home in Perth, Australia. You get to ride along with Damion as he learns a few new things in life like driving a stick shift.

The book focuses not only on the baseball side of life for Damion, but also the trials he has in his love life. He leaves a girl back home and the long distance relationship is too much to handle for the two of them.

There is humor in the book as well. Anytime you get a bunch of young guys together for long periods of time funny things are going to happen. Thrown in some alcohol and things can get out of hand for a few of the ballplayers. It’s a lighter side of the life of a ballplayer that the author shows here. Letting loose is something every player has to learn to do at some point to help deal with the stress of the job. Thus hilarity ensues as each player deals with the stress in their own way.

The story doesn’t stop with Damion in the minor leagues but follows his story to retirement and beyond. I don’t want to give away just how far he gets or how long he plays because I think it would take away from the story. However, I will say that he is not a one year flame out.

This is a story for any baseball fan. You get to see the game from the perspective of another country. The language used to describe certain parts of the game are different than what an American might say which makes it that much more interesting. Even a casual sports fan would enjoy the journey of this young boy because it’s about more than simply baseball. So go out and pick up a copy today.

It’s Not the Job You Do, It’s the Way You Do It

Everybody would probably love to be working in a field that they love; however, some may feel that’s just not possible given their current circumstances. If you are currently doing work that you no longer enjoy, try taking the necessary steps to get to where you want to be. It doesn’t mean quitting your current job straightaway, it just means looking for opportunities to monetize where your passions lie. Start planning how you are going to get there.

What new skills do you have to learn? What new places do you have to network? You should, however, perform your current position to the best of your abilities. Be positive that whatever job you are doing now is not forever. Positive energy is essential to shape your attitude. No matter how bad your current situation is or how bad your boss may treat you, stay positive, you will build resolve and show your mind that nothing can get you down.

Maintaining a positive attitude can take you a long way in life. No matter how bad you think your situation is, there’s always somebody that has it worse, much worse in fact. In this world one could make a strong case that many don’t enjoy doing their jobs, but yet they persist on bringing the same negative attitude to work every day which exacerbates the problem. Only you yourself can stop yourself from doing whatever it is you wish to do provided that you of course have the talent for it.

You can continue to meet your present obligations by working your current job with a great attitude, and then in your free time, pursue your passion. Make sure it is indeed your passion, as you will have to work your body harder than usual. But passion is great for the body, the mind craves passion, it will serve to liven up your spirits, you may find it will give you more energy and enthusiasm at your current job, your boss might even want to give you a raise.

Even if your co-workers have a negative attitude, do your best to try and reverse the situation, always put a positive spin on something. The mind works best when you maintain a positive frame of mind. Understand that it’s only temporary till your work day ends and you can go back to working on your passion. But of course your passion shouldn’t be work.
