How Well Do Your Customers Know You?

Know your customer, know your customer, know your customer. Three very important rules of business. But let me ask you this: How well do your customers know YOU?

Sam Walton, founder of Wal-Mart, asked himself this important question several decades ago. His answer: employee nametags. So, he roled out an initiative that required all of his employees to wear badges, the purpose of which was to "help the customers get to know the people they bought from."

But helping customers "get to know you" is not just about names, it's about information. In other words, it's about self-disclosure, which is the process of revealing your personal information to another.

This process starts with a small piece of information, ie, your name. Then, as the relationship develops, it progresses into more intimate territory with the sharing of opinions, preferences and experiences. What's more, because of its reciprocal nature, self-disclosure has incredible power. It creates comfort, establishes rapport, helps discover the CPI (Common Point of Interest) and builds trust between you and your customers.

I once worked at a mom-and-pop furniture store in Portland, Oregon. More so than any business I've ever walked into, the owners of City Liquidators leveraged self-disclosure to its fullest extent. You could not step five feet into their store without seeing pictures of their family. The walls donned clippings from nostalgic newspaper articles and various personal memories that bought the store to life!

As a result, shoppers who walked in the door felt like they personally knew the owners. Engaging conversations about children, families and growing up in Portland were frequent among the customers. And, the emotional connection sparked by these interactions helped the customers feel more comfortable while shopping – which ultimately secured their loyalty.

Not to mention, self-disclosure actually helps You get to know your customers better as well! Here's another example. My friend Dennis is a doorman at the Ritz Carlton. He is a master of using self-disclosure to establish relationships with guests.

If a family with young children pulls into the front drive, Dennis always gets excited. (He has a young daughter himself.) And as soon as he extends his warm welcome to the arriving guests, he does not hesitate to share information about his own family. Sometimes he'll even show guests a picture! But Dennis knows that an effective way to learn about his customers is to educate them about himself first.

How well do your customers know you? Here are some ways you can use self-disclosure to create comfort and build rapport with buyers:

What's Your Story?

How did you get your start in business? Did you "fall" into your line of work? Sometimes there's an interesting anecdote or event that caused the birth of your business. If so, this is called "Your Story," and it's a fundamental tool for helping your customers get to know you.

Write it out. Practice saying it aloud. Make it funny. And tell it to everyone. Publish it on your marketing materials, and especially your website. Create a special page on your website called "Our Story," or "My Philosophy" that shares this personal anecdote.

Start Blogging

A popular new medium through which share your feelings, experiences and emotions is with a blog. I recently started a Blog for my business, and it's become a valuable tool to stimulate personal dialogue with potential customers. A blog is an online journal on which you can post comments, links, stories and articles. A blog is free and easy, and also a great way to let your customers know what's going on in your life. And the best part about it is: they can post their comments too! Talk about self-disclosure!

Recommend Resources

In your newsletter, on the phone or in person, recommend books, CD's and other resources. Tell your customers how much these things have changed your life, your business and your relationships. If they take your advice, they'll be more inclined to share their own experiences with you, not to mention you'll soon have more things in common!

My friend Ed who works for Cornerstone Financial does this all the time. He spends a few hundred dollars a year buying copies of his favorite books for his customers. He tells them how the books improved his life in the hopes that his customers will reciprocate their similar experiences – which they do.

Your ability to educate your customers not only about your products and services, but about yourself, is critical to your success. If you follow these principles of self-disclosure and reciprocation, your customers will get to know you better than ever before! So, remember what my friend Jeffrey Gitomer says: it's not what you know; It's not WHO you know – it's who knows YOU.

Why Dance, Why Not – A Book Review on Dancing

Over the years, I’ve been very impressed with what Sir Ken Robinson has to say about creativity in our schools. He explains the problem with rote memorization, and seems to speak with the aversion that most Americans have with the No Child Left Behind legislation (NCLB). Some of my friends have called the NCLB Legislation; the No Child Allowed to Advance directive. I guess in some regards I do agree with that observation. In one of Sir Ken Robinson’s most famous TED Talk, he suggests that we ought to be teaching dance in our schools, yes dance.

Why you ask? Well, it is a creative exercise and it helps your brain develop and think. He’s right and now neurologists know why. The nerve endings are attached to nerves which run up the spinal column and right into the brain, it’s an extension of that system. In fact, if you’d like to learn more about all this, maybe I can save you some trouble in your personal research as I had recently asked myself some of these questions, trying very hard to confirm what many teachers and educators have speculated for decades. If this topic also intrigues you there are some very good books I’d like to recommend that you read;

1. “The Artful Mind: Cognitive Science and the Riddle of Human Creativity,” edited by Mark Turner, Oxford University Press, New York, NY, 2006, 314 pages, ISBN: 978–0-19-530636-1.

This book is a compilation of academically peer reviewed articles and essays on the topic, much of which has taken all the old works of white dead men famous psychologists and merged it with modern day neuroscience. Some of which proves what we inherently already know and have readily observed in case studies, other essays challenge the status quo and knowledge we thought we believed turning everything on its head. A very important set of reads for sure, for anyone researching this topic.

2. “Dance/Movement Therapists in Action: A Working Guide to Research Options,” edited by Robyn Flaum Cruz, Cynthia Florence Berrol, Charles Thomas Publishers, Springfield, IL, 233 pages, ISBN: 978-0-39-80750-40.

Edited in a similar format, but the essays focus on what to do with all this new information and how to best utilize it for therapy. Not only does it do tremendous physical good, but it can be used creatively in therapy and learning to do wonders for cognitive ability, helping the student to overcome challenges and increase their ability to think. It all starts with a little dance. I hope when you get a change, you will choose to dance. Please consider all this and think on it.

Profile Photo Tips – Dos and Don'ts

The question often comes up on what types of pictures to put up on dating sites, and how many. Typically, you want to put up more than one picture, and include photos of yourself in different places and circumstances, engaging in different activities. This gives potential dates an idea of what kinds of things you enjoy, and where you like to go.

Beyond that, here are a few dos and don'ts that may help you decide on which photos to upload.

1) Do post pictures of yourself smiling. This generally is considered more positively by most people, and makes you seem friendly. A friendly, smiling face is also more likely to generate interest and encourage communication.

2) Do not post pictures that include ex-boyfriends or ex-girlfriends. This may seem obvious, but many people post pictures with previous romantic acquentions, sometimes in cuddly situations, and this can be a turnoff to many people. Remember, people are on dating sites to start new relationships, and if you have photos of yourself in previous relationships, it may seem like you are not over them yet.

3) Do include full body photos if you can. Many people express a preference for more than just a head shot. If you show just your face, some people think you may be hiding something. Even if you do not have the best figure, it's better to show at least 1/2 to 3/4 of your body to give a better idea of what you look like. People are going to find out how you look anyway anyway, and it's better to be upfront.

4) Do post recent pictures. 2 or 3 year-old photos may still be okay, but a picture from 5 to 10 years ago is probably not appropriate or representative of how you look now. We all looked better when we were a lot youngger, but the point should be to post photos that are accurate and show who you are today.

5) Do post clear, well-lit pictures. Many people have photos that are too dark or otherwise unclear. Again, this may come off like you are hiding something. It should not be difficult to get a clear photo using any decent digital camera. Dark / light photos can be adjusted with photo imaging software, and if you do not have one, a friend can probably edit the picture for you in 5 minutes.

6) Do use natural photos instead of glamor shots.

7) Do edit your photos. Do not make them too small, and crop out unnecessary things or empty space from the photo. The pictures should be about you, so eliminate anything that does not relate directly to who you are.

Make sure you pick your photos carefully. Have fun selecting your photos, and as much as possible, use photos that bring out what makes you unique and special.

Why Do Sky Lanterns Fly?

The sight of sky lanterns is intriguing; they never cease to astonish me. I constantly wonder how they work, what makes them rise up into the sky and stay there for such a long time just before they descend back to earth. I realize it has to be rely on the laws of physics laws but I want far more comprehensive clarification of how this special object works through the wonders of science.

Sky Lanterns have become a frequent sight in recent years. They are normally seen and are popular in ceremonies and anniversaries. There are not that many individuals who would claim they are not mesmerized or enchanted by the sight of these lanterns or flying lanterns as they are also known. As they light up the skies either at nighttime or of course in the day time, you can’t but acclaim this really is physics in action. I did a little bit of research and arrived up to what best explains how this object is lifted into your sky and stays there for at least length 15 to 20 minutes at a time.

The basic principle is the use of very hot air rising upwards in a cooler atmosphere. When hot air fills the sky flying lantern, thus heating it, the response and direct consequence is that the sky lantern rises upwards, similar to a larger hot air balloon. This is because hot air is lighter than cooler denser air, hence the reason why the flying lantern starts flying or indeed floats upwards. The body collects hot air which is created by the heat from the wax fuel cell which it lit prior to the lantern launch. Then after approximately 1-2 minutes the body has enough hot air for the sky lantern to rise and float upwards into the sky. The wax fuel cell then continues to fill the lantern with this hot air which is why the lantern does not fall to the ground. It will however slowly float back down after the fuel cell has completely burnt out. This is when the sky lanterns which are also known as Chinese lanterns slowly parachute back down to earth. This causes no danger to the environment or surroundings as the lanterns are not ablaze at this time. The wick is then safe to touch because at this time it is cool.

The materials used in the making of these great objects are very light such are rice paper and light weight bamboo strips, the wick are also very light indeed. If the materials were heavy the lanterns would not be able to fly.

When using sky flying lanterns, flying lanterns people must take care similar to when using fireworks, although these lanterns are much safer. This is because it uses a naked flame. All Chinese lanterns come with instruction manuals and safety guidelines which have to be strictly adhered to. Safety is paramount in the use of them.

Sky lanterns are now so readily available to purchase on the internet. But you must be careful when choosing a supplier or online retailer. This is because many companies now selling these lanterns are using suppliers from China who produce very low quality sky lanterns which are often very dangerous. The Chinese lanterns made in China are mass produced often using materials such as fiberglass or asbestos. We have done our research and found that the best quality lanterns are from Thailand, many of which are handmade from environmentally friendly materials.

So please be careful when choosing where to buy your sky lanterns and when using them. Most of all enjoy them!

1. Getting the right lure sometimes requires knowing what the bass loves to eat and a good example is a worm. Since it is hard to control where this small creature is doing, the best thing to do will be to get one that is made of plastic.

Free samples of products or services attract more attention of customer or consumers than the product or services with a specific price. It would be interesting to figure out why people love freebies so much.

Free Stuff and Human Mind

When people find out that there is something they will get for free then their mind and psychology make them believe that they are special and they have earned the thing to get it for free. The free things make them feel they have achieved something with no or less effort for getting it. People feel there is less risk in trying out free stuff and they feel that they have nothing to lose if they try the free stuff. So they reach out to try free stuff with no risk and loss. A similar human psychology works when we get attracted to discounted rates or prices of products and services.

Loads of Non-avoidable Expenses

Some People Hesitate Spending Money on what they think is not necessary

There are many people who hesitate to spend money on what they think is not necessary even though they earn a lot of money to save money. When they find out that the product or service is for free then they are more likely to reach out and try the product or services. Such people would possibly try out free stuff than paying for it and experience how the product or service is.

Some People have Low Monthly Income

Some people don’t earn huge amount of money and they have low monthly income. They can’t spend too much money due to lack of funds so they find free stuff more likable and they look out for free stuff because they can’t spend too much.
