10 Rules For Email Marketing You Can’t Ignore

Email marketing is still the most direct and effective form of online marketing for many small and large businesses. But your email marketing can cause you problems if you overlook these 10 rules.

1. Don’t Send Emails Without Permission.

Legitimate email marketing only targets people who have given their permission to receive emails from a business. Emails sent to people who have not requested information or have information that is not relevant become spam email.

2. Offer Something Of Value For Free.

Offer something of value for free in return for somebody’s email address. It needs to be appropriate to your business and can anything from a PDF report to a series of video tutorials.

3. Send A Thank You Email.

Send a thank you email when somebody opts into your list. If you promised a free download, make sure you provide the link in the first email.

4. Always Provide Value.

Each time you send out an email marketing campaign, you need to think how the content will benefit your audience. They did not sign up just so that you could continually try and sell them stuff.

5. Don’t Make It Difficult For People To Unsubscribe.

If your reader decides that they no longer want to receive emails from you, allow them to easily unsubscribe. If you make it difficult they may report you as spam.

6. Is Your Subject Line Appealing?

Your subject line is like the headline of an advertisement and will prompt the reader to open it. Be imaginative with your subject line but don’t make unbelievable claims to trick your reader into opening the email.

7. Remain Consistent.

It’s always a challenge knowing how often to send emails. If you don’t send regularly your subscribers will forget about you but if you send too often they will get fed up with you. The key is to send emails in a consistent manner and stick with it rather randomly sending with no plan or schedule.

8. Understand Your Audience.

The more that you understand your readers, the more you will be able to adjust your content to suit them. If you don’t know what they want, ask them!

9. Keep Your Email List Private.

Have a privacy policy that lets subscribers know that you will protect their data and only send them information that is relevant to what they asked for.

10. Use Email Marketing Software.

Email marketing software can obtain the email details of your prospects and send information back to them instantly. It can deal with multiple customer lists and send out various messages, keeping track of who you send it to, what the subject line was, the body of the email, open rates, click-through rates and how many previous messages you have sent.
